USS Intrepid (CV-11)

The crew of USS Intrepid, like most of the sailors in the fleet, heard the ship’s general alarm while they were at lunch. Scrambling to their guns, it wasn't long before they were under attack. Two kamikazes penetrated Intrepid's antiaircraft umbrella. One, piloted by Suehiro Ikeda, penetrated the flight deck and caused extensive fires on the hangar deck. Kohichi Nunoda’s aircraft hit Intrepid four minutes later, killing most of the firefighting party on the hangar deck. Intrepid burned for four hours. Sixty-five Americans were killed in the attack.

Lou Valenti was on the bridge when the kamikazes hit. He went forward to make a report to the Admiral's Bridge when an officer informed him that a second plane had struck Intrepid. Ed Coyne had been eating lunch with Ray Rucinski when general quarters sounded. When he went to look for his friend, after the fires were out, Coyne found that Rucinski was dead.

The November 25 attacks knocked Intrepid out of the war until January 1945.

Fifty-eight years later, on the spot where Ray Rucinski died, high school students have come to learn about a little-known and often forgotten battle, one of many in the Pacific War. A battle Lou Valenti and Ed Coyne will always remember.
