SB2C Helldiver on USS Hancock (CV-19)

BackMain MenuForward

USS Hancock

An airedale — the nickname for the flight deck crew that handled the planes — gives the signal to launch a Curtiss SB2C Helldiver off of USS Hancock (CV-19) during raids on Luzon, Philippines in November 1944. The SB2C carries an external fuel tank to increase range. With up to a hundred aircraft taking off at once, all the propellers made flight decks dangerous places and many sailors were killed by accidentally walking into whirring blades. You can see the gunners on watch behind the plane. Click on the image to enlarge.
