Kamikaze Impacts USS Essex (CV-9)

Yoshinori Yamaguchi's D4Y3 Suisei type 33 dive bomber explodes on the port side of USS Essex (CV-9) on November 25, 1944. Note the debris field impacting the water hundreds of feet in front of the 880-foot carrier. Despite Yamaguchi either forgetting to arm his bomb or not carrying one, a mushroom cloud expands over the flight deck. Click on the image to enlarge.
