USS Essex (CV-9) crewmen form an honor guard for some of the sixteen men killed in the kamikaze attack. They were sown into canvas body bags with a 40mm shell to add weight, and then sent over the side.
Note: There is some confusion about this photo. The National Archives combat film shows the burial taking place off the stern of the ship. There may have been separate ceremonies for the black mess stewards and the white gunners. If so, this is the burial of the white gunners.
