Scoreboard of USS Cabot (CVL-28) shows Japanese ships and planes destroyed by the ship's gunners and air groups. Unlike the Japanese, who inflated kills for propaganda purposes, the Americans tried to use scores to accurately track the progress of the Navy as they engaged the enemy. With so many ships with thousands of guns firing at enemy planes, several gun crews would claim the same plane. It was up to Navy intelligence to award credit after sifting through all the reports. Several kills were altered after the war after comparison with surviving Japanese records. Click on the image to enlarge.
