Crewmen of USS Cabot (CVL-28) attempt to salvage the deck after the kamikaze hit of November 25, 1944. Note the wooden planks that make up the deck. This wooden construction allowed kamikazes to inflict serious damage on many American carriers. The British carriers sent to the Pacific in 1945 had armored metal flight decks and received less damage. However, when the British ships were damaged, they took longer to repair.
