USS Cabot

Howard Skidmore of VT-29 was spotted to take off on USS Cabot (CVL-28) catapult when the kamikaze struck the ship just behind his TBM Avenger. His plane's propeller was blown off as a fireball engulfed the aircraft. Skidmore credits the flight deck crew with quick action with the fire hoses to keep his crew safe as they bailed out over the wing. All three aircrew survived uninjured. Here you see his plane a few minutes after the attack. Click on the image to enlarge.
