USS Cabot (CVL-28)

Like the other ships of the Third Fleet, USS Cabot's crew went to mess at 1200 Hours. At 1230 the general quarters alarm sounded. Twenty minutes later, the first of two kamikazes hit the port side near the number two 20-millimeter gun gallery. Howard Skidmore and his crew, waiting to take off on Cabot's only catapult, saw his plane’s fuselage “bathed in flame” as the kamikaze killed many in the gun crew and blew the propeller off of Skidmore's TBM Avenger. Five minutes later the second kamikaze came in, striking the waterline below a 20-millimeter gun gallery. Many marines were killed when the kamikaze disintegrated.

USS Cabot History

Gene Masucci's Recollections of November 25, 1944

Frances Choi’s Comments on Gene Masucci

Two Kamikazes in Five Minutes

Skidmore and his crew were able to escape, but thirty-five of Cabot's crew were killed and forty-four were wounded. Cabot had to steam for Ulithi to make repairs. Later Admiral Halsey praised the ship for their efforts to control the fire.

Quartermaster Gene Masucci was on the bridge during the entire attack. Responsible for keeping the ship's log, Masucci documented Cabot's agony on that day. Fifty-eight years later, Mr. Masucci shared his experiences with the high school students in Day of the Kamikaze, on board Intrepid Air-Sea-Space Museum.
